Interlibrary Loan Service Guide

A guide to using interlibrary loan, ship-to-home, and ILLiad.

What can/cannot be borrowed through interlibrary loan?

We will make an earnest attempt to obtain items you request. Keep in mind that some materials can be difficult or impossible to obtain.

Some examples of hard-to-get items include:

  • Dissertations & Theses
  • Reference material (encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.)
  • Books and articles published very recently
  • Conference papers and proceedings
  • Archival or Special Collections materials (rare books, original manuscripts, letters, photos, etc.)
  • Technical standards

Items not available through interlibrary loan include:

  • Items in SCAD Libraries (U.S. locations)
  • Current textbooks
  • E-books, streaming media, and other online-only materials that are not possible to lend
  • Audio/visual materials (DVD, VHS, CD, Cassettes, etc)

SCAD Libraries damaged items
If a book in the SCAD Libraries collection has a status of damaged, missing, or lost, you are welcome to request it through interlibrary loan.

Why was my request canceled?

If your request is canceled, you will receive an email outlining the reasons, if one was given.

Common reasons are:

  • the requested book is available in SCAD Libraries
  • the full-text article or print journal is available in the SCAD Libraries
  • the citation provided is inaccurate or missing important information
  • we were unable to find a library willing to supply the material
  • too new for interlibrary loan
  • item requested is non-circulating
  • requested item is an electronic journal accessible only to the lending library's users
  • item requested is freely available on the Internet
  • not currently enrolled student, faculty or staff member
  • could not fill request by your deadline

Can I resubmit canceled requests?

Requests can be resubmitted if:

  • You have more information about the request.
  • You have had a search done through circulation on an item we own and it has been declared missing.

To resubmit:

  1. Click on “Canceled Requests” to view all requests that have been canceled.
  2. Click on the transaction number of the request you wish to resubmit.
  3. Click on "Resubmit request" in the top right corner of the screen.

How much does it cost?

There is typically no charge for using SCAD Libraries' Interlibrary Loan Borrowing service. Occasionally, borrowing or copyright fees may exceed the maximum amount of $20. In this case, you will be asked to pay the difference in order to receive the item.

If I lose or return an item late, how much does it cost?

  • Charges for lost or damaged books are determined by the lending library and typically include a processing fee.
  • Overdue fines are charged at the rate of $5.00 per day, per item.

How long does it take?

The time it takes to obtain an item can vary considerably. It depends upon a number of factors, including the backlog in the lending library's ILL office and how close the library is to Savannah, etc. The average turnaround time for fulfillment is between one and seven days; however depending on the availability of the item it may take two weeks or longer to fill a request. You may login to your ILLiad account to check on the status of a request or contact the ILL office.
