ILLU 505 - Influences in Illustration: Primary Sources

A Primary Source is something that provides first-hand accounts of a topic from people who had direct connection to the topic. They may be created by the artist or someone who lived during the time of the artist. Secondary sources, such as books and scholarly articles, derive from research on primary source materials.

Primary Sources include:

• artworks
• objects and artifacts
• sketchbooks
• letters
• diaries and memoirs
• interviews

SCAD students have access to a variety of Primary Source materials through the SCAD Special Collections. This includes:

• Artist Made Books which include Artists' Books as well as Pop-Up Books, Zines and Mini-Comics
• The Don Bluth Collection of of Animation, which includes cels, drawings, storyboards, and the business papers for Don Bluth productions.
• Facsimiles, which are a copy or reproduction of an old book, manuscript, or other item of historical value, that has been produced to appear as true to the original source as possible.
• Extremely rare, historic books, codices, and oddities.
